“Treasury Slashies” substitute for Trust?

After the publication of the Panama Papers and various scandals, the reputation of the trust sector suffered. I don’t think all employees working in trust deserve this, but this is not the topic of my blog. The BeNeLux, Ireland and Switzerland house many fiscally driven entities in need of expertise and substance. Banks, lawyers, trust employees and other service providers can offer the expertise. If you are open for substance, expertise and stability at lower cost for your finance entity, there is an alternative.

Labour market developments over the last decade have not always been beneficial for senior treasury experts. Downsizing and treasury entities moving to low wage countries or back to headquarters resulted in many of these experts losing their position. Often they are very knowledgeable, flexible and motivated. They are open for part-time or contractor (ZZP) agreements. Given their severance packages, money is not their key driver. As an example, we found a candidate who is hired to set up an entity and manage it. At the start the assignment is full-time and it will evolve most likely into a part-time one. No problem for this candidate.

Last week, one of my team members taught me about so-called “slashies”. A more flexible labour market lead to a situation where the same person can vary between various roles: interim manager / teacher / coach / parent. The slashes these people use in their LinkedIn profile leads to their nickname: slashies.

Based upon recent successfully completed relevant assignments, input from corporates and availability of highly skilled candidates, I think there is room for more “treasury slashies” helping with complex funding, cash management and solution structuring. They offer the corporate hands-on mentality, high-level expertise, stability and flexibility. Of course this is a niche within a niche market. Time will tell how big it will be. What do you think?
